The Climate Action Network (RAC) published a report on Thursday February 2 which assesses all the measures put in place by major retailers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and considers that these encourage the “overconsumption” of meat. This is the subject of Talk franceinfo. Every evening from 6 p.m., Manon Mella and her guests debate with Internet users on the franceinfo Twitch channel.

Globally, meat consumption is responsible for nearly 15% of our greenhouse gas emissions. It is the first source of CO² emissions on the planet, ahead of transport. Thus, rethinking our food on an individual and collective scale is an environmental priority put forward by associations and environmental activists. However, according to a report by the Réseau Action Climat, French supermarkets would still put too much emphasis on products of animal origin.

Xavier Poux, associate researcher at IDDRI and research consultant at AScA (environmental management consultancy) and Benoît Granier, food manager at the Climate Action Network are in the Talk to discuss it.

For a transition to sustainable food

Food insecurity, inflation, crisis in the agricultural sector: food in France is a question that has arisen for several years in public debate. Moreover, this eminently political subject raises pressures on the environment. In France, food accounts for 24% of greenhouse gas emissions “two thirds of which come from our consumption of animal products” according to the RAC report.

Also, rethinking our diet to make it transition to a more ecological and, in fact, more sustainable system, seems necessary. To do so, the involvement of the retail sector in action plans aimed at promoting sustainable food is required.

Join us from 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the franceinfo Twitch channel to participate in Manon Mella’s Talk. An hour of exchange, clarification, debate around topical and social issues.
