In the last minute of the third quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder, LeBron James hit his 36 on Tuesdaye point of the game for the Los Angeles Lakers, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387 points to become the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.
The match was called off after James’ historic basket, allowing the athlete’s family and friends to come and enjoy the moment with him on the court. A ceremony to celebrate the achievement was also held.
James broke the record for a two-point shot with 10.9 seconds left in the third quarter, bringing his total points, at that time, to 38,388.
Abdul-Jabbar was present to congratulate James. The former leading scorer in NBA history had achieved his record on April 5, 1984, before retiring in 1989 with 38,387 points.
It was only a matter of time before James surpassed Abdul-Jabbar’s record. However, this record had not been beaten for almost four decades.
James started his career in 2003-2004, at the age of 19. He represented the Cleveland Cavaliers early in his career, before playing with the Miami Heat. The basketball star then returned to Cleveland, before joining the Lakers.
Thanks to the Lakers faithful. To be in the presence of a legend like Kareem makes me very humble. To my beautiful wife, my daughter, my two boys, my friends, my family, my mother, everyone who has been by my side for 20 years, thank you. I wouldn’t be who I am without your help, your passion and your sacrifices. To the NBA, thank you for allowing me to be a part of something I’ve always dreamed of. I couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful dream. Damn… thanks everyone.
