The question of a possible feeling of Islamophobia in Quebec is not simple. The statistics clearly show that we are no more Islamophobic than people in the rest of Canada. However, Quebec’s relationship with the “English” since the Battle of the Plains affects the way we judge what we are offered, especially if it risks affecting our self-esteem. Also, since the Quiet Revolution, Quebec has become more nationalistic. More importantly, the place of the Catholic Church in the lives of Quebecers has diminished considerably. So even though our thinking is essentially the same as elsewhere, there is a kind of dramatization of our words.
As a result, the statements of Mme Elghawaby are seen by many as likely to disqualify her. However, other people, especially from the Muslim community, who have already worked with her, find that she is quite the right person. At the same time, the temptation of politicians to use this situation for their own ends is strong.
Looks like there is no possible solution door. However, there may be a way to make winners from both provincial and federal authorities, those who would like to keep it as well as Mr.me Elghawaby herself. This solution would be that Mme Elghawaby keeps her position, but that she is automatically accompanied by someone who fully understands the complexity and nuances of the Quebec soul. The selection could be made shortly by the Government of Quebec, after appropriate consultation. In this way, Mr. Trudeau would maintain his decision, and this would allow Mr. Legault to ensure that everything happens according to a vision that correctly corresponds to the reality of Quebec today.
A very honorable solution therefore for the parties concerned and all Quebecers!
