(Dresden) Félix Roussel and Courtney Sarault won a bronze medal at the Short Track Speed Skating World Cup in Dresden, Germany.
Roussel took third place in the 1000m. The Sherbrooke skater was nestled at the back of the field of five skaters in the final, but he took advantage of a collision involving South Korean Tae Sung Kim and Japanese Shogo Miyata to sneak onto the podium.
He finished the event in one minute, 25.016s (1:25.016), behind South Korean Ji Won Park (1:23.231s) and Latvian Roberts Kruzbergs (1:23.330s). ).
This medal is Roussel’s first in an individual distance.
Sarault was in contention with two compatriots, Kim Boutin and Claudia Gagnon, for a medal in the 1,500 m, but only the skater from New Brunswick reached the podium.
With a time of 2:26.591, Sarault held off Boutin’s push on the final lap to claim the bronze medal, behind South Korean Choi Minjeong (2:26.536) and American Kristen Santos-Griswold (2 min 26, 570 sec).
This is Sarault’s third medal of the season over this distance, after the gold and silver collected in Kazakhstan.
Boutin (2:26.802) finished fifth, ahead of Gagnon (2:27.762), who equaled his career-best result in the 1,500m.
The Canadian mixed relay team, made up of Sarault, Rikki Doak, Pascal Dion and Maxime Laoun, finished just off the podium, behind Italy, South Korea and the Netherlands.
For their part, the men’s and women’s relays won their respective semi-finals to qualify for Sunday’s A finals.
