A Canadian military plane flies over Haiti

A Canadian military aircraft patrols Saturday over Haiti in support of local authorities.

A CP-140 Aurora from the Royal Canadian Air Force is currently flying over the skies of Haiti in collaboration with the Haitian government, said the Canadian Ambassador to Haiti, Sébastien Carrière, on Twitter.

The long-range aircraft is mainly employed during patrol missions. Powered by four propeller motors, it “has an impressive flight range and a suite of advanced sensors that combine to make it a very effective surveillance platform,” the diplomat said.

The operation aims to support the efforts of the National Police of Haiti, faced with a political and security crisis that is getting bogged down.

In January, Canada flew additional armored vehicles to Haiti to combat gang violence against Haitian citizens.

“This monitoring is another step in Canada’s response to the Haitian crisis, which is based on four pillars: inclusive political dialogue, sanctions, humanitarian aid and security assistance,” added Mr. Carrière.
