Truce of fighting, place for debates

It is distressing to see a resurgence of censorship. That Élise Gravel’s book is censored in certain American states is an aberration. Whether or not you agree with the author’s comments on gender, censorship is not the right solution.

Similarly, it is no more acceptable for activists to cancel a lecture, as was the case at McGill last month, by claiming that the professor giving the lecture is making transphobic remarks. Whether or not you agree with Professor Wintermute, again, censorship is not the right solution.

Obviously, questions of gender identity lead to questions as well as uneasiness. Either. But it is discussions that we need collectively on these subjects, and not prohibitions. Without debate, we will never get out of this.

I therefore call for a truce in this trench warfare from which no one can emerge a winner. We listen to each other, we talk to each other.
