Gary Glitter, convicted of sexual assault, released from prison

(London) Former pop star Gary Glitter was released from prison in the UK on Friday after serving half of a 16-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting three young girls in the 1970s.

The 79-year-old singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been released from a prison in Dorset, south-west England. It is common for offenders in the UK to be released halfway through their sentence and then placed on probation.

The Ministry of Justice assured in a statement that Paul Gadd would be closely watched by the police and the probation service. He will also have to wear a GPS beacon.

The singer was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under 13.

Glitter was arrested in October 2012 as part of Operation Yewtree, the national inquiry launched into the child abuse scandal surrounding the late BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile.

Gary Glitter is best known for the tube Rock & Roll (Part 2)released in 1972, but fell out of favor after being convicted of child abuse in Vietnam.
