The St-Sulpice bar, a veritable institution in the Latin Quarter, will close its doors at the end of February after 43 years of service.
The Saint-Sulpice made the announcement on Sunday on its Facebook page. “We thank all our customers, and particularly the student and artistic ones”, can we read in this brief publication.
The bar on rue St-Denis was particularly famous for its huge terrace and was well known to students from UQAM and the Cégep du Vieux-Montréal.
The administration does not mention the reasons for the closure.
As of fall 2020, the bar had closed for renovations. The establishment had to cease operations again during the pandemic.
In January 2022, The Press reported that the property had gone up for sale for the second time since 2019, at a price of $15 million. According to the article, there was interest in developing a mixed commercial and residential project there.
On the Facebook page, many customers have deplored the closure of this bar which reminded them of such good memories. “What nostalgia to hear this news, writes a client. A landmark in my academic career! Thank you for these wonderful years and all these memories of beautiful moments. »
Others spoke of “the end of an era”.
This announcement comes only a few days after the closure of another institution in the Latin Quarter, the Archambault located at the intersection of Berri and Ste-Catherine streets.
