Banned for hateful behavior | Twitter restores pro-Narendra Modi Bollywood star’s account

(Washington) Bollywood star Kangana Ranaut has been reinstated on Twitter after being banned for two years for violating the platform’s hateful conduct policy.

The 35-year-old Indian actress joins thousands of other excluded people – including former US President Donald Trump – who were able to return to Twitter after Elon Musk bought the platform last October.

“Hi everyone, it’s nice to be back here,” Kangana Ranaut tweeted on Tuesday, before launching a series of messages to criticize India’s “money obsessed” film industry. .

Awarded for her performance in Queen in 2014 and Tanu Weds Manu Returns in 2015, it caused a lot of controversy.

In May 2021, she was suspended from Twitter for calling Mamata Banerjee, an opponent of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom she ardently supports, a “monster”.

She had encouraged the elected official to act as a “super gundai” (super thug) against the chief minister of West Bengal.

Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) recently suffered electoral defeat in Mamata Banerjee state.

Kangana Ranaut also attacked Rihanna, who had tweeted about large protests by farmers in India, calling the pop star a “fool” and the farmers “terrorists”.

His return comes as Twitter and other social networks are widely criticized for obeying an Indian government order to block links to a BBC documentary about Narendra Modi’s role during the deadly 2002 communal riots.

Human rights defenders recall in particular that Elon Musk wanted to buy Twitter to make it an absolute bastion of freedom of expression.

According to the Guardianlinks to the documentary have been removed from some 50 Twitter accounts as well as many channels on YouTube (Google).

After his expulsion from Twitter in 2021, Kangana Ranaut had called on Instagram to end his banishment.
