The interim leader of the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ), Marc Tanguay, said Tuesday, at the opening of the pre-sessional caucus, that his political party must “simplify” its message to the population.
“When the issues are less complex, you have to be able to come up with a thoughtful proposal, but you have to be able to explain it,” said Mr. Tanguay, at a press briefing in Lac-Beauport, north of Quebec. . The 19 Liberal MPs are meeting for three days to prepare for the resumption of parliamentary work next Tuesday at the National Assembly.
According to the interim Liberal leader’s analysis, the party’s historic defeat in the last election is due in particular to the overly complex message conveyed during the last election campaign.
Marc Tanguay gave the example of the ECO project, which aims to promote a green economy by combining hydrogen and electricity. “It is a flagship project that we proposed during the election campaign which is a 2050 vision. It is therefore a long-term vision, he said. It was very difficult to be able to translate it in a few seconds, in a few minutes. »
In order to be relevant as members of the official opposition, the Liberals will also have to meet Quebecers across the province, said Mr. Tanguay. “Me first,” he added.
As soon as it returns to the Blue Room, the PLQ caucus will first address the economy, the rising cost of living, the labor shortage and the essential missions of the State, argued Marc Tanguay.
Prime Minister François Legault does not lead a government “of results”, he lamented. “It’s a government of failures when you look at what is happening in health, in justice, in childcare services. »
Liberal candidacies “under analysis” for the partial
Regarding the upcoming Quebec by-election in the Montreal riding of Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne, Marc Tanguay assured that “several candidacies are being analyzed”. “We will have the opportunity to make our choice and announce it. »
The date of the poll has not yet been announced by the government of François Legault. The latter will have to trigger the by-election by the end of May.
Quebec solidaire has however already presented its candidate, Guillaume Cliche-Rivard, who will try to fill the seat left vacant by the departure of the former Liberal leader Dominique Anglade. In the last elections, Mr. Cliche-Rivard had won nearly 28% of the vote and finished second behind Ms. Anglade (36% of the vote).
According to Mr. Tanguay, however, the Liberals are not lagging behind the Solidarity Party, in particular because of Ms. Anglade’s seven-year record as MP for the riding. “Dominique represented in an extraordinary way, in a remarkable way, in a very unifying way, all the citizens of Saint-Henri–Sainte-Anne,” he pointed out.
The profile sought by the party is that of a candidate who is familiar with local issues and who is “glued to his living environment,” said the interim Liberal leader.
