A few days ago, we were informed of the $3 price increase for Internet service at Videotron. Despite a seemingly small increase, this is a symbolic hostile gesture by Videotron.
It goes without saying that in the midst of inflation, this is a 3.4 to 5.6% increase relegated to customers. I would like to remind you that the Internet is now considered an essential service by the government itself, and households should not have to tighten their belts too much to access it. I would add that Canadians are among the most billed in the world when it comes to telecommunications and the Internet: a long-running war between consumers and providers has been going on for decades, while monthly billing is steep and hard to justify, except out of habit.
I would also like to remind you that Quebecor has benefited greatly from the pandemic and has seen its revenues increase substantially, reaching $3.7 billion in 2021. This financial growth was obviously sufficient to secure the purchase of Freedom Mobile from Shaw. Clients should not be passed on the bill for this business choice.
I have the impression that many Videotron shareholders, as well as Pierre Karl Péladeau, little known for their sensitive and generous business practices, do not understand the financial reality of normal people, who are probably among those who have already won the salary of the average Quebecer from their first hour of work in 2023. […]
This increase is therefore unacceptable. I invite Videotron to provide us with the figures explaining its decision.
I take this opportunity to specify that Videotron personally offered me a discount to avoid this text. This kind of à la carte practice does not interest us.
