[Critique] “Extraordinary”: not great, but extra

Disney+ is currently the most generous viewing platform for films and series featuring “mainstream” superheroes, including those from the Marvel stable. The entertainment giant is doing some self-mockery with this second British original series (following the very forgettable Wedding Season…), which scratches gently and in a very beautiful way this kind of productions always very popular, although often too predictable.

Note thatExtraordinaryproduced by the same company that gave us the enjoyable spy thriller Killing Eve, is under the sign of Star, the more “adult” part of the platform. And with good reason, since under its fantastic exterior, the colorful and slightly “slobbery” comedy imagined by newcomer Emma Moran is a learning story for adult life that does not avoid jokes aimed at an informed audience, at least by Disney+ standards. Thus, we meet Gen (Máiréad Tyers, formidable), a young woman in her mid-twenties who is a little lost and a little ostracized, since she has no superpowers in a world where everyone sees a supernatural gift appear. when he turns 18. Thanks to the efforts of her roommates, a bit pathetic despite their useful powers, and the collaboration of a strange guest, our heroine, not great but very endearing despite her banality, sometimes reluctantly tries to activate her possible gift, or to understand why it is not showing up. This intermittent quest, the subject of many highly successful comedic moments, reveals the protagonist’s strengths and qualities, which are probably more valuable than all the magical gifts in the world…
