Shaken by a crisis for several days, the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital is calling on volunteers to relieve the pressure on its staff.
“We are in an hour-to-hour management situation that remains difficult given the staff currently available,” said Jean-François Fortin Verreault, President and CEO of the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Ile-de -Montreal
In a press release released Thursday, he asked for the help of volunteer health workers to come and lend a hand to the staff of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital. Several nurses in the network have already filled a few shifts.
“We would like to thank them for this great solidarity and we confirm that we will take all the help that will be offered to us from the experienced nursing staff available,” the statement said.
Earlier this week, a hundred breathless nurses at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital threatened to resign, in particular because of the abusive use of compulsory overtime.
The collaboration of the population requested
The situation remains “precarious” in the emergency room of the Maisonneuve-Rosemont hospital, which serves the east of the city. Up to 60 patients a day continue to present with non-priority medical problems.
The situation is similar to the emergency room at Santa-Cabrini hospital, where nearly 25 patients go daily when they could be treated elsewhere. In addition, nearly 50% of these patients have a family doctor, the statement said.
In order to unclog emergencies, the collaboration of the population is once again requested in order to go through alternative routes, if possible. The clinics in the territory are “ready” to quickly receive these new users, we add.
“It is important to inform the population that patients who nevertheless present themselves to the emergency room without the situation requiring it will be redirected to an alternative to the emergency room such as a consultation with a health professional”, recalls the press release.
