Indian police say two men are facing charges in connection with the cold weather death in Manitoba of a family trying to cross into the United States nearly a year ago.


Police Deputy Commissioner Chaitanya Mandlik of the Crime Division in Ahmedabad, Gujarat state, said the pair were arrested on Sunday and other suspects were also wanted in Canada and the United States. in that case.

According to Mr Mandlik, the two men were accused of acting as immigration agents, providing the family members with papers and helping them in their attempt to travel to the States -United.

Both men are charged with culpable homicide not constituting murder, attempted culpable homicide, human trafficking and criminal conspiracy.

According to Deputy Commissioner Mandlik, Jagdish Patel, his wife and their two children first arrived in Toronto from India, then moved on to Vancouver and Manitoba. From there, they tried to walk to the United States, irregularly, with seven other migrants. According to Indian police, the Patels froze to death in severe cold around January 19, 2022.

Deputy Commissioner Mandlik indicated that the Indian authorities were in liaison with the Canadian Embassy for further action.
