Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said on Wednesday he was ready to talk to Canadian companies that disagree with his policies, including his reform of the energy sector, which aims to increase the state’s share in production. of electricity.

“We will always be open to dialogue,” assured Mr. López Obrador before a bilateral meeting in Mexico City with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau.

The latter participated on Tuesday, in Mexico City, in the 10e summit of North American leaders with Mr. López Obrador and the President of the United States, Joe Biden. He hailed “a real deepening” in “economic” relations between the two countries. “We are stronger and better when we work together, all three”, had also launched President Biden during this meeting intended to strengthen economic and trade relations between the three countries.

On the other hand, the three countries have avoided addressing in front of the press the subjects which annoy within the free trade treaty which has bound them since 1994.

Canada and the United States have been denouncing in particular for several months the reform of the energy sector led by President López Obrador, who wants to strengthen the state companies CFE (electricity) and Pemex (oil). This reform threatens foreign investment, worry the two countries.
