During the night from Saturday to Sunday, a tragic road accident occurred in Senegal. It was around 3:15 a.m., near the town of Kaffrine, that a collision between two buses allegedly took place. This is, according to a press release from the National Fire Brigade, the deadliest tragedy of recent years. According to the government, this incident caused 39 deaths, 53 hospitalized injuries and 42 minor injuries. The Head of State also made a point of announcing a national mourning to pay tribute to the victims. “Following today’s serious accident in Gniby which caused 40 deaths, I have decided on a national mourning for 3 days from January 9th. An interministerial council will be held on the same date to take firm measures on road safety and public passenger transport. “According to the first elements of the investigation […]a bus assigned to public passenger transport, following a tire burst, left its trajectory before colliding head-on with another bus coming in the opposite direction”, confided the public prosecutor of Kaolack.
