It is (finally) done: since January 1, 2023, male condoms are free and available without a prescription in pharmacies for all young people under the age of 26.
“A small prevention revolution” had launched the President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron during a session of the National Council for Refoundation (CNR) devoted to the health of young people in Fontaine-le-Comte near Poitiers (Vienne).
The Ministry of Health, concerned about the sexual health of young people, hopes that this free will allow young people to have easier access to this method of contraception. Indeed, behind this measure hides a real desire to actively fight against the proliferation of sexually transmitted infections and diseases and against HIV. Especially since in recent years, specialists have observed a resurgence in the number of STIs observed, especially among the youngest.
Did you know ? Less well informed about the risks associated with STIs, we would see a 45% increase in STIs between 2017 and 2019 among young people aged 15 to 29.
How to benefit from this device?
For young people under 26, it is very easy to get a box of condoms from a pharmacy. Without a prescription and completely free, all you have to do is ask for a box of condoms at the counter.
For those under 18, you will have to give your date of birth to the pharmacist. No need to present documents justifying their identity or age: the process is anonymous. On the other hand, for 18-25 year olds, you will have to present your Vitale card to prove your age.
In addition, only two brands of condoms are currently reimbursed: Eden, which contains 24 condoms in a box and Sortez Couverts, which contains 12.
Two brands already reimbursed by Social Security, with no age limit, but on mandatory prescription from a doctor or midwife.
Did you know ? Previously, only screening centers, certain associations or school infirmaries could give out free condoms, without a prescription.
Other prevention provisions
This announcement is in addition to other preventive measures already taken to improve the sexual health of young people. Among these provisions, we find:
– Screening for HIV, diseases and sexually transmitted infections in all medical biology laboratories, without a prescription and with 100% coverage for those under 26;
– Free contraception for young women up to the age of 25 inclusive;
– Free emergency contraception, without prescription, for all women, without conditions.
Did you know ? According to Public Health France, 15% of people who discovered their HIV status in 2021 were under the age of 25. So remember to get tested regularly!
