Reading | The duty

We are lucky in Montreal to have Internet access to the catalog of fifty, if not more, of the city’s libraries, which must easily represent a million books, […] all absolutely free.

I have always loved reading. Is it because a very long time ago, for my nine-year-old birthday, it was 74 years ago, when I was already reading fluently, I received a book as a gift that I still remember of the title : My elephants from Chad.

Since then, I have always read; I prefer reading to television. Besides, I haven’t had any for years. When I realized that the only thing I watched on television was the news, and I could watch it just fine on my computer, I gave my television as a gift to my cleaning lady. I have nothing against television, I’m sure there are very good shows, and a lot of stupid shows…

My daughter, who saw me so often immersed in reading, gave me a little sign a few years ago with the aphorism: “Reading seriously harms ignorance. »

Groucho Marx, who with two of his brothers made two or three generations of filmmakers laugh, said: “I find that television is very favorable to culture. Every time someone turns it on in my house, I go into the next room and read. »
