In addition, by hitting the target on a penalty kick during the 23e minute of play, Messi scored his 12e career World Cup goal, which allowed him to join Brazilian Pelé in fifth place in the all-time rankings.
This goal also allowed Argentina to take a 1-0 lead. A net from Angel Di Maria at the 36e minute allowed the Argentines to carry the mark 2-0.
This was the score at the end of the first half.
