(Quebec) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet his Quebec counterpart, François Legault, on December 16, in Montreal.
This will be a second meeting for the two men in less than a month, since they had briefly met on the sidelines of the Francophonie Summit in Djerba, Tunisia.
Friday’s meeting should this time be longer and be used to deal with various topics, including the thorny issue of health transfers.
At this time, there are no plans to hold a press briefing after the meeting.
Remember that Quebec, along with the other Canadian provinces, has been pleading for years for a substantial increase in federal health transfers.
The Trudeau government has said it would raise them on the condition that the provinces and territories collaborate on a national system for sharing health data.
Mr. Legault is, however, awaiting a concrete offer from the federal government.
In addition to the financing of the health system, Mr. Legault will want to discuss with Mr. Trudeau the situation of French in Montreal.
The irregular entry of migrants at Roxham Road was also briefly discussed in Djerba.
Since his re-election on October 3, the Premier of Quebec has made language and immigration his main priorities.
In Tunisia, François Legault was satisfied with his meeting with Mr. Trudeau, even going so far as to welcome the “openness” of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Mr. Legault then felt he had “set the table well” for their next one-on-one.
