Lithium production will be able to resume in Abitibi-Témiscamingue, starting in the first months of 2023. The Sayona Quebec mining company announced on Sunday that it had obtained all the necessary permits to restart activities at the North America Lithium Complex, in La Corne.
In a press release, the company says it has collected a total of more than 130 permits from government authorities, including the Ministry of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks, the Ministry of Natural Resources and of Forestry, as well as the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
In a press release, the CEO, Guy Laliberté, said that it was “essential for the complex to go into production in order to satisfy part” of the world’s demand for lithium, which “is increasing every week”. The company aspires to become a link in a future supply chain for lithium ion batteries used in electric vehicles.
The activities of this mine had been stopped in 2019, before it was bought by Sayona in August 2021. The company says it has worked hard for more than a year to relaunch operations in the first quarter of 2023.
Although several lithium mining projects are underway in Quebec, La Corne would be the first to start production. Sayona would therefore be the only producer of lithium concentrate in the province for the time being.
