Mitch Marner continues his series of games with a point
Mitch Marner extended his one-game streak to 21 with a second-period goal as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Los Angeles Kings 5-0 on Thursday.
With the Maple Leafs leading 3-0 on goals from Pierre Engvall, David Kampf and William Nylander 1:06 apart in the second period, Marner scored with a slap shot after a turnover at the Kings blue line. Auston Matthews also hit the target for the Maple Leafs.
The Maple Leafs (17-5-6) won for the seventh time in eight outings and handed the Kings (14-11-4) their seventh loss in 10 games.
Marner’s streak is now tied at 23e rank in NHL history with Dave Taylor, Adam Oates and Bobby Hull. He has 10 goals and 16 assists during the streak.
Ilya Samsonov made 29 saves for his first shutout for the Maple Leafs and the seventh of his career.
Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, who stopped 36 shots, held his club in the game for the first 25 minutes.

Tyler Seguin plays heroes in overtime against the Senators
Tyler Seguin scored with 29 seconds left in overtime as the Dallas Stars edged the Ottawa Senators 4-3 on Thursday to avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season.
Seguin got down on one knee and raised both fists after scoring his fifth goal of the season following a pass from rookie Wyatt Johnston.
Miro Heiskanen scored twice in less than two minutes to give the Stars a 2-0 lead in the first period as Nils Lundqvist tied the game with nearly five minutes left in the third period.
Lundqvist assisted Heiskanen’s second goal. The Stars had just suffered their first shutout loss of the season two nights earlier.
Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg and Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger both made 28 saves. Forsberg faced one more shot, the one that settled the dispute.
Derick Brassard, Thomas Chabot and Travis Hamonic hit the mark for the Senators.

Lightning beat Predators 5-2
Brayden Point scored twice as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Nashville Predators 5-2 on Thursday night.
Point gave the Lightning a 3-2 lead with his second goal of the night. He successfully completed a two-on-one climb in the third minute of the final third.
Nick Paul extended the Lightning lead a few minutes later and Brandon Hagel sealed the game shorthanded with 4:20 remaining.
Corey Perry also moved the ropes for the Lightning, who still hadn’t scored shorthanded this season. Brian Elliott made 34 saves.
Lightning captain Steven Stamkos extended his one-point streak to 12 games. He participated in two goals of his own.
Mark Jankowski and Alexandre Carrier found the back of the net for the Predators, who had won seven of their last 10 games. Juuse Saros stopped 27 shots.

Panthers beat Red Wings 5-1
Veteran Chris Tierney scored his first goal of the season in his second game with the Panthers, and the Florida team scored four times in the second period to thrash the Detroit Red Wings 5-1 on Thursday.
Rookie Matt Kiersted also scored his first goal for the Panthers, who have won seven consecutive games against the Red Wings and 17 of the last 19 meetings.
Tierney and Kiersted were recalled this week from the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League and have given a boost to a team that has struggled with injury and illness.
Eetu Luostarinen, Josh Mahura and Matthew Tkachuk also scored for the Panthers, and Sergei Bobrovsky made 20 saves.
The Panthers have reunited with their captain, Aleksander Barkov, after missing the past two weeks with pneumonia.
Jonatan Berggren provided the response for the Red Wings, and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 36 shots.

Jets win 5-2 at St. Louis
Pierre-Luc Dubois scored two goals and added an assist as the Winnipeg Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 5-2 on Thursday night.
Kyle Connor, Blake Wheeler and Cole Perfetti have also scored for the Jets, who have won their last three games and seven of their last eight.
Mark Scheifele set up two goals while Connor Hellebuyck blocked 29 shots for the Manitoba squad, which is 7-0-1 in their last eight games against the Blues.
Robert Thomas and Josh Leivo replied for the Blues, who lost for the fifth time in their last six outings.
Thomas Greiss, who was making back-to-back starts for the first time this season, stopped 15 pucks in the loss.
Dubois opened the scoring by beating Greiss with a one-timer with 4:11 remaining in the first frame. The Quebecer scored the Jets’ fourth goal in the third period.
