We who know so well how to waste…

My partner and I have just returned from Cuba, where we have just spent two weeks. When I got home, I discovered Finances Québec checks in the mail. That’s twice $400 falling from the sky to help us survive the effects of inflation. Big deal ! Do we have to form a rich society not to realize more of the immense means at our disposal and which we squander so cheerfully? What insolent wealth is ours! How can a state that continues to hand over millions to its constituents hope to turn them into concerned, educated and responsible citizens?

The Cubans, whose country we appreciate so much, have very little. They have learned, by coming to terms with it, the value of things, whereas we, who lack nothing, apparently never have enough to be satisfied and cultivate even the illusion of well-being. I want to be very clear here: I have no illusions about the romantic side of the Cuban revolution. […] But with the little they have, Cubans have accomplished two things that it is clearly impossible for us to achieve: to have a universal, structured and efficient health and education system and to achieve independence.

How long must we squander our immense resources before we succeed in following their example? It is not necessary to hope to undertake nor to succeed to persevere…
