the first part of the season insured in the Pyrenees

More than a meter of snow fell this weekend on the heights of Luchonnais. A real gift for professionals a few days before the stations open.

The episode is not historical but it is “notable”, one specifies in the services of Météo-France in Toulouse. In two days, this Saturday and Sunday, the Pyrenean mountains were covered with a thick layer of snow, which augurs well for a very good start to the season. A few days before the opening of the majority of the resorts, less than three weeks before the Christmas holidays, and especially after a completely blank year linked to the health crisis, tourism professionals are smiling.

In 48 hours, more than a meter of snow fell on the heights of Luchonnais, at more than 2,000 meters, in the resort of Superbagnères in Haute-Garonne. In Ariège, Météo France noted up to 1.32m of powder on the heights of Maupas in the Couserans. On the west of Ariège, between 60 and 70 cm of snow fell, 50 on the east at the border of the Pyrénées Orientale. The record for this snowfall in the Pyrenees was set in the Hautes-Pyrénées, with 1.49m of snow in Ardiden.

Météo France explains that when such snowfalls arrive at the end of November-beginning of December, they guarantee “at least in part” the ski season. Indeed with more or less a meter of powder, except exceptional warmth, the sun does not manage to overcome such a quantity of snow and a few weeks. The Christmas holidays are therefore guaranteed -except rebound of the Covid obviously- for professionals, and it is possible to be optimistic for the February holidays.

Stations Peyragudes, Le Mourtis, Superbagnères and Ax-3Domaines open this Saturday December 4th.
