National Assembly adopts motion condemning repression in Iran

The elected members of the National Assembly adopted a motion on Friday aimed at castigating the “violent repression of the demonstrations” in Iran and supporting the women of the country “who are taking part in a real feminist and democratic revolution by going out in the streets without veils”.

“Iranian women are writing the history of the world before our eyes,” said Ruba Ghazal, a Solidarity MP for Mercier, at the Blue Salon. The latter deplored the “cowardly assassination” of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd, in mid-September.

A protest movement has shaken the country since the death in detention of the young woman, after being arrested by the morality police because she would not have covered her hair properly. These demonstrations were suppressed by Tehran.

Women in Iran are tired of being scared and having to watch “every bit of hair that sticks out”, Ms.me Ghazal. “They are tired of gender apartheid. »

The adopted motion also calls for the withdrawal of the Islamic Republic of Iran from the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. The National Assembly also calls on the Iranian authorities “to cooperate fully with the independent international commission of inquiry which will focus on the alleged violations of human rights in the wake of the popular uprisings”.

The motion is the fruit of cross-partisan work by women from the four political parties represented in the National Assembly, namely the Coalition avenir Québec, the Liberal Party of Québec, Québec solidaire and the Parti québécois.

Martine Biron, who is both Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie and responsible for the Status of Women, was absent from the press briefing held before the motion was tabled.

Asked about this when she entered the Blue Room, she replied that she had followed the discussions “step by step”, but chose to mandate the CAQ MP for Mirabel, Sylvie D’Amours, to take care of the file. “I think we have to put the deputies who have experience to work”, underlined Mr.me Biron.

Further details will follow.
