5 things to know about the village of Saint-Sévère, where dairy cows are on the run

The run of a herd of dairy cows put Saint-Sévère “on the map”. And since the eyes of all of Quebec are on it, it’s an opportunity to learn a little more about the (very) small municipality of Mauricie.

Where is Saint-Severe?

Saint-Sévère is located northwest of Trois-Rivières, more precisely in the RCM of Maskinongé. The main economic vocation of the Mauritian locality is dairy, pig and cereal agriculture.

The village owes its name to Father Joseph-Sévère-Nicolas Dumoulin, parish priest of Sainte-Anne-d’Yamachiche, considered to be the founder of the parish.

Saint-Sévère was officially born in July 1855.

A hyperpopular CEO

The director general of the municipality, Marie-Andrée Cadorette, stole the show on the set of Everybody talks about it, Sunday night. She notably knew how to charm Quebec − and the other guests of the show − thanks to her great sense of repartee.

In response to a tweet from host Véronique Cloutier, the host of Everybody talks about itGuy A. Lepage, stated that the interview with Mme Cadorette was among his 10 favorites of the 19 seasons.

On Twitter, followers of the show dream of seeing Marie-Andrée Cadorette in the seat of court jester.

Who is the mayor of the municipality?

It is Jean-Yves St-Arnaud who assumes the function of mayor of Saint-Sévère, in addition to being prefect of the MRC de Maskinongé. Last February, he became president of the Table of elected officials of the Mauricie.

Mr. St-Arnaud made his political debut in 2013 as a municipal councilor for the village, of which he is now mayor. He has held this position since 2017.

How many people live there?

The village has 326 Sévérois and Sévérois women (or if you prefer: Marie-Andrée Cadorette, Jean-Yves St-Arnaud and 324 others).

With its 31.87 km2, Saint-Sévère is the smallest village in the RCM of Maskinongé. The population density is 9.7 per square kilometer.

Do you dream of going to live in the countryside? Well, know that the average value of a residence in this RCM is $174,593 in 2022, according to recent data from the Institut de la statistique du Québec. It was $165,175 in 2021.

Cows from the neighboring village

The cows on the run come from a farm located in Saint-Barnabé, a village of nearly 1,200 people located north of Saint-Sévère.

According to Google, six minutes by car separate the center of the two villages (1h30 on foot or 23 minutes by bike).

However, we don’t know how long it takes to get from one village to another at the speed… of a herd of cows.
