Italy: 13 missing after a landslide due to heavy rains

Thirteen people were missing on Saturday morning after a landslide caused by heavy rains on the Italian island of Ischia, off Naples, according to Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI.

The landslide occurred in the town of Casamicciola Terme, in the north of the island, and “buried a house” and threw several cars into the sea, said the fire department, adding that they were looking for of the missing.

According to the agencies, thirteen people were still missing at the end of the morning, while the slip occurred very early on Saturday.

A car swept into the sea had two people on board, but they were able to be saved, firefighters said

Local authorities have urged residents of the island to stay at home, so as not to interfere with rescue operations.

Casamicciola Terme, a spa resort with 8,000 inhabitants in winter, suffered an earthquake in 2017 that killed two people. It had, however, been completely destroyed by a much more powerful earthquake at the end of the 19th century.
