(Doha, Qatar) Seven European federations ask their captains not to wear the multicolored “One Love” armband, in support of the LGBTQ+ community, after FIFA threatened players with sporting sanctions.
The announcement was made jointly by Germany, England, Belgium, Denmark, Scotland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, whose players intended to wear this armband which disturbs the leaders of the Qatar. “FIFA has been very clear. It will impose sanctions if our captains wear the armbands on the field. As national federations, we cannot ask our players to risk sporting sanctions, including yellow cards,” the seven federations state.
Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. Violators face fines and jail time.
