[Critique] On your screens: Between magic and nostalgia

love for all

Let’s forget for a moment the highly touted reality shows that sell love as a mere commodity, even if it means tolerating inappropriate behavior. Contrary to Double occupation and consorts, limitless love is a benevolent documentary series, offered by Canal Vie and produced by Urbania, which focuses its camera on a few single people living with an inconvenience or a handicap – physical or mental. Over the course of ten episodes, the public follows the participants in their search, not without obstacles, for a partner.

The latter can count on the very dedicated Vanessa, Émilie and Darlène, from the Rencontreadapte agency, who support and guide them in their quest. To do this, the three women notably organized a happy hour so that their customers had the opportunity to break the ice and get to know each other better in an intimate and relaxed setting. Will the event have aroused any interest on the part of members of Adapted Meeting? The screenwriter and director oflimitless loveMaude Sabbagh, invites viewers to follow what may be at the origin of the formation of one or more couples.

What do soccer and jewelry have in common?

The answer is as simple as this name: Georges Schwartz. Born in Paris in 1929 and arrived in Montreal some thirty years later, the man is one of those pioneers who participated in the democratization of soccer in the country, a homeland that was firmly established in hockey. The documentary soon to be broadcast on Radio-Canada thus paints the portrait of this protester with a big heart, survivor of the Shoah, now 93 years old. Jeweller, soccer player, journalist and sports commentator, Georges Schwartz has always known how to stand out thanks to his unparalleled expertise and his strong opinions.

We learn, for example, in the film, that it was Georges Schwartz who led Canada’s unsuccessful bid for the Soccer World Cup in 1986, finally awarded to Mexico against a background of controversy. It was also he who, several years earlier, had been chosen by the federal government to make the jewel that was to be offered to Lady Diana for her marriage to Prince Charles. His talent had even seduced Celine Dion who, at the time, appeared on the cover of a magazine adorned with his creations. There is no doubt that his non-conformism will have made him a prominent Quebec personality of the past century.

disco fever

The documentary series DISCO comes to agitate the programming of TVA. From Patsy Gallant to the late DJ Robert Ouimet via Judi Richards, its director, Charles Gervais, compiles the fascinating memories of those who lived in the carefree and open Montreal of the 1970s, which was one of the world capitals of disco.

An opportunity for the most nostalgic to immerse themselves, among other things, in the entrails of the emblem of this lost era, the Lime Light, a local nightclub at the avant-garde of Studio 54 in New York. The disco institution was also frequented by both metropolitan youth and renowned artists such as Grace Jones, David Bowie and Gloria Gaynor…
