Blues win 5-2 in Chicago

Ryan O’Reilly scored the eventual game-winning goal shorthanded and the St. Louis Blues defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Wednesday night.

Less than a minute after the Blackhawks had cut the deficit to 2-1, O’Reilly intercepted a cross pass from Patrick Kane to start a 2-on-1 build. His first shot was blocked by goalkeeper Arvid Soderblom, but he pushed his return into the net.

Jordan Kyrou, Ivan Barbashev and O’Reilly all finished the game with one goal and one assist. Calle Rosen and Tyler Pitlick also scored in the victory.

Jordan Binnington stopped 24 pucks for the Blues, who have won their last four outings.

Andreas Athanasiou scored both goals for the Blackhawks, who suffered a second consecutive loss.

Coming off a 39-save performance in a win over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, Soderblom allowed five goals on 35 shots for the Chicago squad.

The Ottawa Senators snapped a five-game losing streak at home by beating the Buffalo Sabers 4-1 on Wednesday night.

Alex DeBrincat, Austin Watson, Brady Tkachuk and Tim Stutzle, in an empty net, hit the target for the Senators. Anton Forsberg made 29 saves.

Tage Thompson was the lone scorer for the Sabers, who suffered a seventh straight loss.

Eric Comrie started the game for the Sabers but was unable to finish it after saving 22 of 24 pucks. Craig Anderson, a former Senator, came on as a relief midway through the second period and finished the game with 14 saves.

Watson opened the scoring midway through the first frame when he scored his 50e NHL career goal. Thompson replied on the Sabres’ sixth power play, however.

Just three minutes after the visitors’ goal, Tkachuk gave the Senators the lead for good by jumping on a rebound to beat Comrie on a power play.
