G20 summit concludes with statement aligned with Canadian interests

The world’s largest economies are closing the G20 summit with strong condemnation of Russia and a commitment to deepen collaboration to prevent another pandemic.

The G20 research group says this means Canada met most of its goals at the summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Canada has pushed countries to further isolate Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, something many developing countries want to avoid as they try to preserve their relationship with Russia and the West.

In the final statement, the leaders point to existing United Nations votes calling on Russia to withdraw from Ukraine and say the war is hurting the global economy.

They also endorse a call for a global fund to prevent pandemics, although countries have pledged a fraction of what is needed to get the fund started.

G20 leaders also pledged to aim for the UN’s goal of containing global warming to 1.5°C, which includes a side deal to help Indonesia phase itself out of coal.
