Critique of To Kill Time | The fatalism of Adib Alkhalidey

Two years ago, Adib Alkhalidey launched a first album, The evil flowers, under the pseudonym of Abelaïd. It is openly and under his own name that the comedian, screenwriter and actor launches this time To kill timealbum even more intense than the previous one, if that is possible.

We find here his very poetic pen, certainly his strength. In humor as in song, Adib Alkhalidey takes care of his texts, and each piece has at least one little gem. ” So to kill time / I dread the worst “, he sings in the very powerful title song of this album which speaks of ruptures and mourning.

The subjects here are not light, and the vaguely electropop coating does not pull them up so much, even if we feel that the singer-songwriter would like, like Stromae, to play on the effect of a certain dichotomy.

The atmosphere remains quite heavy despite everything, among other things because of his very strong interpretation and the strangeness of certain electro sounds. Above all, there is a certain and assumed fatalism in Adib Alkhalidey, who manages to use the word “nihilism” in two different songs, that is to say.

And even when he regains faith in love and turns to the light, a little doubt remains. Because he remains the one who counts among those souls/who hide to cry — a phrase, like a leitmotif, which he uses in Among these souls at the beginning of the album, and Among these men at the end, and which respond to each other.

Sensitive, ultra-lucid and skin-deep album, To kill time shines with a dark and painful luster. It is also a strange and imperfect journey, crossed as much by fleeting flashes of joy as by cries of despair, and where poetry is king. But who leaves the impression that after two albums, the singer-songwriter may have made the rounds of his subject and that the song is more destined to remain an interesting side note in a career as brilliant as it is significant .
