The company operating the Nord Stream gas pipelines, targets of alleged sabotage in the Baltic Sea at the end of September, has been authorized to carry out its own underwater inspections in the exclusive zone of Denmark, announced Friday November 11 the Danish Agency geodata. The permit was granted on November 1.

Four major gas leaks were detected on gas pipelines linking Russia to Germany, all in international waters, on September 26. Two are, however, in the Swedish economic zone and two in that of Denmark. Preliminary underwater inspections reinforced suspicions of sabotage, as the leaks were preceded by explosions, investigators said.

At the end of October, the Nord Stream consortium, of which the Russian Gazprom is the majority shareholder, sent a civilian ship under the Russian flag to carry out an inspection in the Swedish zone. Sweden and Denmark, where investigations are ongoing, have refused Russian participation in the inspections.

Since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in late February, the two pipelines have been heart geopolitical tensions, fueled by Moscow’s decision to cut off gas supplies to Europe.
