Quebec-based Biothermica Technologies has deployed technology developed in the province to dilute methane in the ventilation air of one of the largest metallurgical coal mines in Virginia.
Owned by Coronado Global Resources, an Australian public company, the mine will benefit from a thermal oxidation technology which, once preheated, makes it possible to oxidize the methane diluted in the ventilation air without using polluting fossil fuel.
The implementation of this project last July will help reduce emissions from the mine by 300,000 TeqCO2, which is equivalent to removing around 65,000 petrol cars from the roads.
“This project will reduce our carbon footprint related to methane emissions at our Buchanan mine and contribute to our commitments to reduce our GHG emissions, in line with the Global Commitment on Methane initiated by the United States and the European Union at COP26,” Bob Cline, VP Business Development and Engineering, Coronado Global Resources, said in a statement Thursday.
Remember that methane represents 20% of all greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by the planet and that the United States is one of the main emitting countries.
“Other projects are being discussed in the United States and elsewhere in the world as well as on mines other than coal mines. Our company is part of the solution against global warming,” said Dominique Kay, vice-president of the Air and Technologies division.
