The driver of a cube truck died, while his passenger escaped with minor injuries, during an accident of rare violence with another heavy truck, Tuesday morning, at the western end of the Monteregie.
The tragedy occurred shortly after 8 a.m., at the corner of Route 201 and Chemin Saint-Henri, in the municipality of Sainte-Marthe, not far from Rigaud.
According to the authorities, the driver of the cube truck was traveling on Chemin Saint-Henri and wanted to take Route 201, after having made his mandatory stop.
He would not have seen the tractor-trailer which was coming to his left.
The impact was extremely brutal, shredding a portion of the driver’s side cab of the cube truck.
The driver of the cube truck would have died on the spot. The victim remained incarcerated for approximately 90 minutes and local firefighters used lifeline pliers to extricate him.
The 29-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The passenger in the cube truck was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The police were to meet him during the day to try to understand the circumstances of the tragedy.
The driver of the semi-trailer truck, which was loaded with grain, was not injured.
A portion of Route 201 was closed to traffic for a few hours to allow Sûreté du Québec collision investigators to do their job.
