COP27 opened in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday 6 November with the aim of “laying the foundations for faster and more courageous climate action”, according to Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary General. This is the subject of Talk franceinfo. Every evening from 6 p.m., Manon Mella and her guests debate with Internet users on the franceinfo Twitch channel.

Sunday, November 6, the 27th edition of the Conference of Parties opened in Egypt, in the city of Sharm-el-Sheikh, on the shores of the Red Sea. 196 countries are represented by nearly 40,000 participants with the objective of strengthening commitments to limit global warming to +1.5 degreesa target already endorsed by the Paris agreements in 2015. However, since this historic agreement, the objectives have been difficult to meet by the signatory countries, which raises questions about the real impact of the summits for the climate.

Manon Mella receives Sébastien Treyer, Director General of the IDDRI (Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations) and Thierry Robert, director of the series “A new world” broadcast on arte.tv from this evening.

Organized by Egypt this year, COP27 aims to focus on requests from the African continent, which is the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change between drought, floods and climate migration. The COP27 meetings were therefore developed, certainly more than in other years, by the environmental geopolitical issues that oppose countries of the North and countries of the South.

However, NGOs and environmental activists denounce the inefficiency of this type of summit for the climate. Recently Greta Thunberg called these conferences greenwashing machines and communication operations ». So what are COPs for?

Join us from 6 p.m. Monday to Friday on the franceinfo Twitch channel to participate in Manon Mella’s Talk. An hour of exchange, clarification, debate around topical and social issues.
