Billie Jean King Cup | Australia defeat Slovakia in curtain raiser

(Glasgow) Australia have forged an insurmountable 2-0 lead against Slovakia in the Billie Jean King Cup opener on Tuesday as they bid for their first title in 48 years in the team competition women’s tennis.

Storm Sanders and Ajla Tomljanovic each scored a singles victory to confirm Australia’s Group B triumph ahead of the doubles match.

Sanders defeated Viktoria Kuzmova 6-4, 6-3, while Tomljanovic easily defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-1, 6-2 at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Scotland.

Australia has won this competition, formerly known as the Fed Cup, seven times. All his titles were acquired between 1964 and 1974.

At the end of the day, the host country, Great Britain, will face Kazakhstan.

Twelve countries, including Canada, participate in this competition, and they are divided into four groups of three. Each duel consists of two singles matches and one doubles match.

Canada, which will be relying on Leylah Annie Fernandez, Bianca Andreescu, Carol Zhao and Rebecca Marino, will begin their journey on Thursday against Italy. He will then cross swords with Switzerland the next day.

The winners of each group will advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, and the final will take place on Sunday.
