Cement manufacturers are in the sights of the President of the Republic. Emmanuel Macron receives this Tuesday at the Elysée the managers of the 50 French industrial sites that emit the most carbon dioxide. Among them the cement manufacturers: six Lafarge sites including that of Teil are concerned.
The manufacture of cement releases large quantities of CO2
It is the manufacture of cement itself which is in question for two reasons. The limestone must first be heated to a very high temperature: combustion releases greenhouse gases. Moreover, when heated, limestone releases carbon dioxide. All cement manufacturers are concerned, such as Calcia and Vicat. But they are not the only ones: like ArcelorMittal in Moselle, Dunkirk and Fos-sur-Mer, Trimet which manufactures aluminum in Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in Savoie or even the glassworks of Arcques in Pas -de-Calais.
These 50 sites targeted by the President of the Republic emit 10% of total CO2 emissions in France, or for comparison what 4 million French people emit. It is a question of thinking about how to reduce this pollution.
low carbon cement
Cement manufacturers are already working to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Lafarge management explains that it has developed a range of “ECOPlanet” cement. Manufacturing emits 30-70% less CO2 by weight. It is a question of replacing the fossil fuels of the ovens by the combustion of waste. The modernization of facilities also makes it possible to limit CO2 emissions.
