At the L’Essaïon theater in Paris, a quintet met for a jazz session like no other. Two guitars, a double bass and two singers appropriate essentials, on original French lyrics, fitting with a zazou tune from Saint-Germain-des-Près.
The Peach : Funny Jam has and gives, in what turns out to be more of a musical piece than a concert. If there is no overall plot, each piece has its own. Their interpreters develop a dramatic, comical presence, well in time and in place. Rhythmic.

Let’s go for an hour fifteen, or even more, by Duke Ellinghton, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Django Reinhardt or Chick Corea… Bruno Buijtenhuijs wrote the lyrics and designed the show carried by the vocal duo of Rachel Pignot and Julie Costanza. Each piece is a little story told by the play of musicians and singers in a light and twirling atmosphere.
Humor dominates over a three-beat tempo, where we recognize So What, Take Five, Donna Lee… but also original pieces by Bruno Buijtenhuijs, including one Bassist Blues by the very designated Franck Richard, most memorable. It plays, it sings, it dances with a vengeance, with the guitars of the adapter, lyricist and composer, accompanied by Geoffroy Boizard.
The show would lend itself to cabaret, with the clink of glasses in counterpoint. The beautiful Essaïon cellar is at least reminiscent of those in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It offers its intimate setting to an overflowing and communicative love for nostalgic jazz, while being more alive than ever.
“Dole de Jam” by Bruno Buijtenhuijs. With Geoffroy Boizard, Frank Richard, Bruno Buijtenhuijs, Julie Costanza and Rachel Pignot. Every Monday at 9 p.m.
