A few weeks ago, Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was received in Washington by her opposite, Anthony Blinken, Secretary of State. In front of the cameras and by way of welcome, the exchanges were cordial, friendly and of exemplary protocol.
We can hear, if we watch the press briefing, the American diplomat speaking briefly in impeccable, articulate and high-level French. There is something here to open the eyes to these leaders who represent Quebec and who have no Francophone except the name on this very slow but constant assimilation (I remember … Mommy, mommy why is it to late?).
The saddest thing is that, either they do not realize the situation of French in Quebec, or they are squarely in another “national” sphere, far from the “common people”, as the remarks made recently by one suggest. certain p.-dg I occasionally chat with Americans, and they frequently make the effort to say or write to me a few words in French, starting with hello!
