“The City of Terrebonne put up a $75,000 (taxpayer’s money) fence to block the road that gives me access to the back of my property to drive me crazy and hired a 24-hour security guard. 24 and seven days a week to make sure I don’t destroy the fence,” Mr. Awad wrote on his Twitter account on Friday.

Contacted by the QMI Agency, the City of Terrebonne confirmed in the evening that a fence had indeed been installed at the cost of $100,000 at the back of its Biodiversity Corridor, a 650-hectare space intended to preserve wildlife and the flora.

“The reason we do this is to protect the natural area. It is a space that is for the citizens of the city of Terrebonne, then we noticed that there was deforestation that was carried out in this area illegally, ”explained Stéphanie Bénard, communication advisor for the City. from Terrebonne.

Acts of vandalism have been observed in this area located on the edge of the municipality of Bois-des-Filion, behind the residences of Place du Coteau. The cutting of several dozen trees on August 3 notably encouraged this decision, according to the City.

“The objective is not to limit access to it for citizens, but to ensure its protection. It is sad that the City had to take these exceptional measures to preserve a site belonging to all, ”said the city’s director general, Serge Villandré, in a press release.

Terrebonne was also required to hire an outside firm to monitor the site at night during the work period, since land boundary markers were destroyed and fence posts were damaged.

Any act of vandalism can result in mischief charges that can lead to fines and jail time in some cases, the city said.
