Do you know the oaks in our area?

Antoine Bled, director of the ONF Poitou-Charentes, lists for us the oaks that we most often encounter in this region: sessile oak and pedunculate oak come first. But there is also the pubescent oak (with its hairs under the leaves and which tolerates drought better), hairy, tauzin, green (which we meet more on the coast, which likes sandy soils and which does not lose its leaves ), cork and American red which has attracted a lot of attention since the 90s (which produces beautiful logs).

All oak trees make acorns? Yes the acorn is the fruit of the oak.

The oak leaf with its rounded cutouts, is it a reality for everyone? Yes, but the leaf of the red oak is more chiseled, with points.

How old are oak trees?

Some are thousand years old, several hundred years are common, we have the remarkable tree the Oak of the Patriarch in the forest of Hermitain and the Five Brothers who are also in this

forest.

On the exploitation side, from what age do we cut the oaks? From 35 years old to make bouchot posts for mussels, fence posts and firewood.

For the barrels, what age do we expect? To make barrels, oak trees from 200 years old are cut down.

The one who planted the oak and the one who will make barrels of it will therefore never meet.

Thank you Antoine Bled.
