Tuesday 1er November, journalist Dorothée Lachaud shares some tips on the 13 Heures set to stop wasting food.
On average, at home, each French person throws away an average of 29 kilos of food per year, which represents 2.5 kilos per month. Every year, seven kilos of still packaged food are thrown away. Vegetables are thrown away the most, followed by fruit and bread. “According to Ademe, this represents an average of 400 euros per year per household that end up in our trash cans”explains Dorothée Lachaud, present on the 1 p.m. set, Tuesday 1er november.
Some products are thrown away because consumers do not understand expiry dates. “Honey, sugar, pepper, salt, vinegar, for all these products, there is no shelf life! They are imperishable“, indicates the journalist. Pasta, rice and flour are also eaten several years after the deadline. Cans, if they are not inflated, do not represent a risk. Among the foods that can be kept in the fridge , sodas can be drunk for up to a year later.”Sauces and milk, if unopened, can be consumed up to two months after the expiry date“, concludes Dorothée Lachaud.
