Darcy Kuemper blocks 34 shots as Capitals shut out Predators 3-0
Darcy Kuemper was perfect in front of 34 shots and the Washington Capitals shut out the Nashville Predators 3-0 on Saturday night.
Kuemper had his first shutout of the season for the Capitals, who posted a third win in their last four outings.
Beck Malenstyn, Aliaksei Protas and Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net for the Washington squad.
Juuse Saros stopped 32 pucks for the Predators, who have lost six of their last seven games.
Kuemper had to be effective early in the game, as he frustrated Yakov Trenin just 13 seconds into the game. He also made a mitt save to deny Predators captain Roman Josi a goal in the third commitment.
It was the 26e Kuemper shutout in the NHL. He had recorded five during the last campaign, when he wore the colors of the Colorado Avalanche.
A great comeback from the Islanders, who win 5-4 against Colorado
Down 3-0 after 8:33 in the second period, the New York Islanders snatched a 5-4 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
Evan Rodrigues scored before and after Mikko Rantanen’s goal, for the initial charge.
Noah Dobson pulled one back before the second intermission, then the Islanders added four more unanswered goals.
Zach Parise, Scott Mayfield and Anthony Beauvillier beat Alexandar Gergiev in 7:21, turning the tide. Between the goals of Mayfield and Beauvillier, there were only 17 seconds.
Brock Nelson completed the push into an empty net.
Alex Newhook put suspense with his goal at 19:30, but the Islanders were able to sign a third victory in a row.
Georgiev made 39 saves, six more than Semyon Varlamov.
Late Nikita Kucherov goal wins Lightning
Nikita Kucherov broke the tie with 57 seconds remaining and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the San Jose Sharks 4-3 on Saturday.
Brandon Hagel set the table for Kucherov on a two-on-one comeback.
Victor Hedman, Ross Colton and Alex Killorn also moved the strings for the Lightning. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 24 pucks.
Erik Karlsson scored twice as Nico Sturm hit the target once for the Sharks. James Reimer made 22 saves.
The Lightning never trailed in the game and denied Sharks head coach David Quinn a 100e victory in the NHL.
Brent Burns ends overtime to win Hurricanes 4-3
Brent Burns ended the debate with 54 seconds left in overtime and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Saturday night.
Martin Necas and Jordan Staal both had a goal and an assist as Jordan Martinook rounded out the scoring for the Hurricanes.
Antti Raanta gave up three times on 29 shots in the victory for his team.
Nicolas Deslauriers had a goal and an assist while Wade Allison and Owen Tippett scored once for the Flyers.
Carter Hart stopped 34 of 38 pucks aimed at him in a losing cause.
Necas forced overtime as he eluded Hart’s vigilance with a wrist shot from the blocker’s side. There were only 2:05 left in the third period.
Victor Olofsson gives Sabers victory in overtime
Victor Olofsson scored twice in overtime and the Buffalo Sabers defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Saturday.
Olofsson got his sixth goal of the season 36 seconds into the extra period.
He put an end to the debate with a slapshot following a pass from Tage Thompson – the author of the other two nets of his.
Thompson led Buffalo with 38 goals last season.
Craig Anderson blocked 23 pucks for the Sabers.
Jason Dickinson, Sam Lafferty and Taylor Raddysh replied for the Hawks. Arvid Soderblom made 41 saves.
Lucas Raymond brace leads Wings to victory in Detroit
Lucas Raymond scored his first two goals of the season on Saturday, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild.
Ville Husso made 30 saves for the Wings, who had lost their last two games.
Raymond scored 23 goals last season as a rookie.
He broke the deadlock with 4.3 seconds left in the second period on the power play.
Raymond has five goals in three career games against Minnesota.
On the Wild side, Kirill Kaprizov scored and Filip Gustavsson blocked 23 shots.
The Wild wrap up a five-game road trip Sunday night in Chicago.
Detroit will play again Monday night in Buffalo.
Kings beat Maple Leafs 4-2 through Gabriel Vilardi
Gabriel Vilardi capped off a three-goal run by the Kings in the second period and the Los Angeles squad defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Saturday night.
The Kings were leading 2-1 when Vilardi slipped into the slot before beating goaltender Ilya Samsonov. It was his seventh goal of the season.
Kevin Fiala had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who tied the game at .500. Adrian Kempe and Viktor Arvidsson also scored in victory.
Anze Kopitar was involved in two goals, including Vilardi’s, as Cal Petersen stopped 26 of 28 pucks for the Californians.
John Tavares and Pierre Engvall replied for the Maple Leafs, who suffered a second straight loss. Samsonov allowed four goals on 29 shots.
Montour breaks deadlock and Florida wins 5-3 over Ottawa
Brandon Montour broke the tie at 16:28 in the third period and the Florida Panthers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3 on Saturday.
Montour also took part in two nets.
Carter Verhaeghe had a brace and an assist in the win.
Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk were Florida’s other scorers, while Spencer Knight made 23 saves.
The Panthers had lost their last two games.
Shane Pinto, Brady Tkachuk and Nick Holden scored for the Senators, who have lost their last two games.
Anton Forsberg stopped 50 shots.
Barkov’s goal was the Panthers’ first power-play goal at home this season, in 13 chances.
Claude Giroux of the Senators faced Florida for the first time since the trade at their deadline last season.
The Senators will play their next game Tuesday night in Tampa.
Rangers edge Stars 6-3
Vincent Trocheck had two goals and an assist Saturday to help the New York Rangers win 6-3 against the Dallas Stars.
His second net brought the score to the final account at 13:25 in the third period, with Alexis Lafrenière among his accomplices.
Julien Gauthier scored his first goal of the season for the Rangers, who ended a four-game losing streak.
Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Zac Jones also scored for the visitors, while Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves.
Mason Marchment, Roope Hintz and Jason Roberson offered the Stars’ response.
Jake Oettinger blocked eight of 10 shots before injuring his lower body. Scott Wedgewood then stopped 13 pucks.
Bob Gainey and Derian Hatcher have been honored as part of the Hall of Fame’s inaugural cohort of Stars.
When Dallas won the Stanley Cup in 1999, Gainey was the club’s GM and Hatcher the captain.
The other members of the first cohort are Mike Modano, Neal Broten, Sergei Zubov and Jere Lehtinen.
Modano, Zubov and Lehtinen also played in the champion edition of the team.
Oilers come from behind to beat Flames
Zach Hyman scored twice, including the game-winner at 12:24 of the third period, and the Edmonton Oilers came from behind to beat the Calgary Flames 3-2 on Saturday night.
Connor McDavid, who added two assists, also moved the ropes for the Oilers, who have won their last three outings.
Stuart Skinner made 40 saves for the win and improved to 2-1-0 this season.
Mikael Backlund and Brett Ritchie replied for the Flames, who had won their last two games.
Jacob Markstrom saved 22 pucks and suffered his first loss this season. He now has a 4-1-0 record for the Calgary squad.
Pressure from the Oilers in enemy territory caused a turnover that led to the game-winning goal. McDavid attempted a pass in front of the net, but the puck touched Hyman’s skate before ending behind the red line.
