Cole Spieker caught six passes for 105 yards and a touchdown on Saturday as the Montreal Alouettes completed the regular season with a 38-33 win over the Toronto Argonauts.
Spieker had a paying catch for 53 yards in the first quarter.
Late in the game, he made a key catch for a first down, allowing his team’s surge to continue.
Running back Jeshrun Antwi dropped a ball shortly after, at the Argos 4 line, but the Montreal defense held firm thereafter.
The Alouettes (9-9) will host Hamilton in the Eastern semi-finals on November 6.
The winners will play in Toronto on November 13.
Toronto (11-7) was already assured of the top of the section.
The score became 28-28 when Jeremiah Haydel of the local club returned the second half kickoff from 87 yards for a touchdown.
About four minutes later, Jabari Ellis of the Alouettes blocked a clearance attempt by John Haggerty and regained the ball for a touchdown.
After the placements of Boris Bede and David Côté (19 and 41 yards), Montreal was in control 38-31 at the end of the third quarter.
In the Birds, Dominique Davis was the starting quarterback instead of Trevor Harris.
The 36-year-old veteran had a break — like many other regulars on both sides, including quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson.
Davis had 166 passing yards, with two touchdowns and one interception. Davis Alexander took over starting late in the second quarter.
Dejon Brissett of the Argonauts, an athlete from Mississauga, scored his first touchdown on the Canadian circuit in the first quarter, catching a 27-yard pass.
