In order for the Canucks to continue to meet the salary cap, the Hurricanes agreed to withhold 18% of remaining salary to be donated to Bear this season.
Bear, 25, had five goals and nine assists in 58 games with the Hurricanes last season. He had, however, lost his position in the team’s formation this season and had still not played.
A native of Regina, Sask., Bear has 13 goals and 34 assists in 190 NHL games with the Edmonton Oilers and Hurricanes. The Oilers selected him in the fifth round, 124e in total, in the 2015 draft.
For his part, Pederson also found himself in the American Hockey League. He played 44 NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks, recording one goal and four assists.
