A case canine rabies was confirmed this Thursday on a dog detained in a shelter in Évry-Courcouronnes, announced the Ministry of Agriculture in a press release. The animal, which died on October 25, bit several people.
People who were bitten by this dog were quickly taken care of by the rabies center of the Institut Pasteurwho administered a very effective post-exposure prophylactic treatment to them, specifies the government.
People exposed to the animal contacted by the ARS
The other people identified as having been exposed to the animal were contacted by ARS Ile-de-France. Health authorities point out that rabies is not transmitted between humans.
Health authorities were contacted on Tuesday, October 25 for a report of suspected rabies in a 4 year old dog and detained in this refuge in Évry-Courcouronnes. The final results obtained on October 27 confirm this diagnosis.
A dog may be illegally imported
The animal has developed the first signs October 19 and died October 25. The ministry specifies that no other animal in the shelter showed symptoms or signs suggestive of rabies.
The first investigations, still in progress, indicate that this dog could have been illegally imported from Morocco, a country where rabies is endemic. The refuge is currently closed and prohibited access to unauthorized persons since this date.
