In Ukraine, all eyes are on the dam of Kakhovka in the region of KersonSunday, October 23. The Ukrainian president, who has called for an international observation mission, accuses Moscow of having mined this hydroelectric plant with the aim of flooding the entire area.
It is a highly strategic hydroelectric dam located at Kakhovka (Ukraine)and supplies water to a large part of southern Ukraine. The Russians seized it at the start of their offensive. Ukraine now accuses them of mining the facilities with the aim of flooding the region with Kherson. Around the dam, the inhabitants are evacuated by boat by pro-Russian forces as fighting intensifies in the area.
“The water level will rise several meters at the start. The wave could be 60 meters“, assures an evacuated resident. According to the Ukrainian president, 80 localities could quickly be submerged by the giant wave if the dam were destroyed. Floods could halt the counter-offensive ukrainian but also affect the cooling of the reactors of the nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia which draws its water from the artificial lake of the dam. The Russians would nevertheless have a lot to lose because infrastructure supplies water to the Crimea they have annexed. They accuse the Ukrainians themselves of targeting the dam. Ukraine calls for an international observation mission.
