Nick Robertson scores twice, Leafs win in overtime

Nick Robertson played heroes in overtime with his second goal of the game as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Dallas Stars 3-2 on Thursday night.

Robertson took a pass from Auston Matthews on a three-on-one build and eluded Scott Wedgewood.

Alexander Kerfoot also flashed the red light for the Maple Leafs. Ilya Samsonov stopped 26 shots while Michael Bunting had two assists.

Tyler Seguin and Luke Glendening provided the reply for the Stars. In his first game of the season, Wedgewood gave up three times on 43 shots.

The Maple Leafs were coming off an awkward 4-2 loss to the Arizona Coyotes, the second-to-last team in the overall standings last season. They had also lost to the Montreal Canadiens, the NHL’s worst team in 2021-22.

As for them, the Stars had outscored their opponents 13-3 in the first three games of their season.

Jeff Petry picks up three points in Penguins win

Jeff Petry had a goal and two assists to help the Pittsburgh Penguins crush the Los Angeles Kings 6-1 on Thursday night.

Petry took advantage of a power play in the second period to score his first goal for the Penguins, who acquired him from the Montreal Canadiens in the offseason.

Ryan Poehling, acquired in the trade that brought Petry to Pittsburgh, also moved the ropes for his new team, albeit shorthanded.

Jan Rutta, Jake Guentzel, Rickard Rakell and Jeff Carter also threaded the needle for the Penguins, who won for the third time in four games this season and went undefeated in regulation.

Tristan Jarry lost his shutout with 2:28 remaining in the game when Carl Grundstrom cheated. The Penguins goaltender made 39 saves.

Cal Petersen started the game for the Kings and allowed three goals on nine shots. In relief from the second period, Jonathan Quick saved 22 of the 25 pucks aimed at him.

Taylor Hall hands Bruins shootout victory

Taylor Hall was the lone shootout scorer as the Boston Bruins defeated the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 on Thursday.

Hall slipped the puck between John Gibson’s pads.

Linus Ullmark then sealed the result by frustrating Maxime Comtois in the fourth round.

Hall also scored in the second period, before Frank Vatrano replied.

Ullmark made 30 saves, Gibson 35.

The Ducks lost a fourth game in a row.

Their five-game road trip wraps up Sunday night in Detroit.

David Pastrnak hit the post in the first period, where Boston outshot 13-5.

A first victory for the Sharks

Erik Karlsson scored 49 seconds into overtime and the San Jose Sharks earned their first win of the season on Thursday, beating the New York Rangers 3-2.

Karlsson lost the puck after a tenacious effort in the slot. He stayed there and it was from there that he hit the mark on a nice pass from Timo Meier, coming from behind the net.

Logan Couture and Radim Simek were the other scorers for the Sharks, who had lost their first five games of the campaign.

James Reimer made 21 saves, being beaten by Artemi Panarin and Filip Chytil.

Meier was racing a 400e regular season game in the NHL.

Igor Shesterkin blocked 24 shots.

David Quinn got his first win as Sharks coach. He was at the helm of Rangers from May 2018 to May 2021.

Blue Jackets come from behind to defeat Predators

The Blue Jackets came back from a two-goal deficit for the second straight game, winning every opportunity.

Nick Blankenburg scored the game-winning goal with 83 seconds remaining in the game and the Columbus Blue Jackets came from behind to defeat the Nashville Predators 5-3 on Thursday night.

Blankenburg, who had been sidelined for the first three games of the campaign, added an assist. Johnny Gaudreau scored twice as Jake Bean and Justin Danforth completed the scoring for the Columbus squad.

Yegor Chinakhov was involved in two goals for the Blue Jackets, which saw Elvis Merzlikins save 23 pucks in the win.

Tanner Jeannot and Yakov Trenin both had a goal and an assist for the Predators, who suffered their fourth straight loss. Ryan Johansen also hit the mark.

Colton Sissons had two assists while Kevin Lankinen stopped 37 shots in front of the Predators net.

Devils 4-1 win over Islanders

Ondrej Palat scored twice to help the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Thursday night.

Nico Hischier had a goal and two assists as Jack Hughes scored his first goal of the season for the Devils.

Mackenzie Blackwood blocked 16 shots for the New Jersey squad, which recorded a second straight win.

Anders Lee deprived Blackwood of a shutout and Ilya Sorokin made 37 saves for the Islanders.

Hughes opened the scoring early in the second period when he slipped the puck between Sorokin’s pads after accepting a long pass from Damon Severson.

Palat, who signed a five-year, $30 million contract with the Devils in the offseason, doubled the lead in the second period before dealing a blow to the Islanders in the third period.
