On Sunday October 16, thousands of French people gathered in the streets of Paris to denounce wage inequalities and warn about the climate crisis. Several political personalities including Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Olivier Faure made a remarkable appearance there.
Thousands of people came to march in the streets of Paris against the high cost of living and climate inaction. To the call of the Union of the Left, demonstrators with multiple demands came to express their fed up. In the crowd, yellow vests, union activists who came to demand more social justice and young people worried about the climate. In the front row of the march, several left-wing politicians answered the call. They made the trip to show their unity. “The French are tired of seeing inequalities increase, of having a government that considers that fiscal stability is needed for the richest and during this time levy on the others”insists Olivier Faure, First Secretary of the Socialist Party.
At the head of the procession, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, accompanied by the Nobel Prize for Literature, Annie Ernaux. The boss of the Insoumis sees in this day of mobilization the birth of a new Popular Front: “With so many organizations calling on trade unions and politicians, we are drawing the construction of a new Popular Front which will exercise power in its country when the time comes”. Some incidents and degradations took place on the sidelines of the demonstration. This day of action calls for another with the inter-professional strike scheduled for Tuesday, October 18.
